David Shaw, a former Stanford coach with over 20 years of experience, is making a comeback to the NFL with the Denver Broncos. Shaw, who is 51 years old, will be joining the team as their Senior Personnel Executive. This move marks his first NFL job since leaving Stanford after the 2022 season.
Shaw has a history with Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton, as they both worked together for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997. Payton was the team’s quarterbacks coach while Shaw held a quality control coaching position. After stints as Ravens’ wide receivers coach and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator, Shaw transitioned to college football when he joined Jim Harbaugh at Stanford.
Shaw served as Stanford’s offensive coordinator for four seasons before taking over as head coach when Harbaugh left for the San Francisco 49ers. Under Shaw’s leadership, Stanford continued its successful run with winning seasons in each of his first eight years. The team posted a record of 34-7 in his first three seasons and produced NFL No. 1 draft pick Andrew Luck in 2012.
Despite being a popular candidate for NFL head coaching jobs, Shaw remained at Stanford until the end of his tenure. However, the team’s success declined in his final years as head coach. Stanford struggled in his last four seasons, posting losing records and failing to maintain the high level of success they had previously achieved.
Shaw resigned from his position shortly after the conclusion of the 2022 season, during which Stanford struggled and finished with a loss to BYU. Now, he is set to embark on a new chapter in his career with the Denver Broncos, bringing his experience and expertise to the NFL once again.
