The state of New York is facing a serious health issue with the discovery of a dangerous mix of substances in the Central New York area. The New York State Department of Health has issued a public health alert, warning residents to be cautious when dealing with any unregulated substances. This alert was prompted after two samples labeled “Super Mario” were tested by the department’s Drug Checking Program community partner ACR Health and found to contain fentanyl, xylazine, trace amounts of heroin, and carfentanil – a drug considered to be 100 times stronger than fentanyl.

The samples were collected on May 20th and confirmed by the laboratory on June 6th. Dr. James McDonald, the state Health Commissioner, emphasized the dangers of carfentanil, stating that it is so hazardous that it is no longer marketed. The Drug Checking Program at ACR Health played a crucial role in quickly identifying this dangerous substance, connecting individuals who use drugs with resources and support.

According to the state Department of Health, the dangerous substance has been linked to severe wounds requiring emergency department care within 2-3 weeks of use. They are urging New Yorkers to exercise caution when dealing with any unregulated substances, regardless of their label or packaging. In Monroe County, there were 124 overdoses in May, with six potential overdose-related fatalities, according to the county’s opioid overdose tracker.
