Sega has announced a reboot of its popular franchise Crazy Taxi, which will be an open-world massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game. The news was confirmed in a developer interview on YouTube, featuring quotes from Sega’s team and brief instances of game footage. The reboot will allow many players to participate simultaneously, although the game mechanics are still in the testing phase. The aim is to preserve the essence of the original franchise while integrating MMO elements, with footage showing multiple yellow taxis engaged in racing with convertible police cars in pursuit.

The map for the Crazy Taxi reboot is rumored to be inspired by California, with “theme park-like” features. The game has been referred to as a AAA title, indicating that Sega is investing significant resources in its development. Job recruitment pages suggest that the game is being built using Unreal Engine. The concept of an open-world Crazy Taxi aligns well with its status as a predecessor to games like GTA. The MMO aspect, however, remains a wild card, with opinions divided on its potential impact.

Sega’s trend of revisiting nostalgic titles continues with plans to revive several classic IPs, including Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage. Despite these efforts, some fans are still clamoring for a modern remake of the offbeat Seaman game. With Crazy Taxi joining these ranks, it looks like Sega is set to keep fans entertained for years to come.
