In response to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Hawaii, the state’s Department of Health (DOH) issued a warning to the public on June 13, 2024, at 3:00 AM HST. According to the weekly report for June 4-10, there were a total of 1,330 active cases statewide with a seven-day daily average of 172 cases. This represents an increase of 22 cases from the previous week.

Despite this increase in cases across the state, Kaua‘i County is the only county that reported a decline in cases. The seven-day case average for Kaua‘i is now 12, down one case from the previous week, with the lowest number of active cases at 84. However, this decrease in Kaua‘i’s COVID-19 activity does not detract from the overall high levels of disease activity throughout Hawaii as indicated by the DOH Respiratory Disease Dashboard. This dashboard shows that COVID-19 disease activity levels are currently in the red, signifying high activity compared to historic trends.

Given this high level of disease activity and to reduce the risk of transmission, the DOH recommends several precautions for individuals across Hawaii. These include getting vaccinated against COVID-19, staying home if feeling sick or experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19, wearing well-fitting masks indoors or outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintained, and taking a COVID-19 test if experiencing symptoms.

The DOH continues to closely monitor the situation and provide regular updates on COVID-19 data through its website. It is essential for everyone to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from further spreading COVID-19 throughout Hawaii and beyond.
