The 2020 presidential election in Arizona was won by Joe Biden, but 18 individuals have been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly participating in a scheme to falsely certify Donald Trump’s victory. The attempt was made to reverse Trump’s defeat and the complaint alleges that 11 of these individuals met in December 2020 to sign a certificate stating that the state’s delegates were eligible to vote in the Electoral College, even though Biden had won Arizona.
In the American electoral system, the party with the most votes in a state’s presidential election takes all of its local delegates to vote in the Electoral College. Following the meeting, the signed certificate was shared via social media and sent to Congress and National Archives. Those charged include Kelli Ward, state legislators Anthony Kern and Jake Hoffman, Michael Ward, Tyler Bowyer, Greg Safsten, Jim Lamon, Robert Montgomery, Samuel Moorhead, Nancy Cottle, Loraine Pellegrino and Ted Goodman who is reportedly referred to as “unindicted co-conspirator 1”.
This legal proceeding highlights ongoing concerns about the integrity of the 2020 presidential election and its consequences. In addition to those indicted whose identities were not revealed there were seven other individuals charged but their names have not been disclosed.
