In June 2023, Washington Health System in Pennsylvania officially partnered with Pittsburgh-based UPMC to form UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene. This affiliation was solidified through a letter of intent signed by both parties. The collaboration aims to improve healthcare offerings and ensure the longevity of quality care in Washington and Greene counties.

As part of the new affiliation, UPMC has committed to investing a minimum of $300 million over the next ten years to enhance clinical services at UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene. The partnership is seen as crucial for preserving community healthcare assets and ensuring a healthy future for the region for generations to come.

Brook Ward, president of UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene, expressed excitement about the completed affiliation and anticipated the start of a new era of cooperation with UPMC. Over the past decade, WHS has worked closely with UPMC in various areas such as oncology, pediatric specialties, heart and vascular care, women’s health, cardiology, emergency care, diagnostics, surgical services, primary care and these collaborations will continue to receive UPMC’s support and further enhancements.

A local board of directors will oversee UPMC Washington and UPMC Greene, consisting of 11 former WHS board members and five new UPMC members. The affiliation will not impact in-network access for community members to WHS hospitals and doctors as existing contracts with national and regional insurers will be maintained for both UPMC Washington
