During the City Council meeting held on Tuesday, representatives voted to designate June 11 as Phil Hatch Day in honor of El Paso sports legend, Coach Phil Hatch. The proclamation was met with applause from those present, including Hatch himself, who expressed his gratitude for the recognition and praised the support of those around him. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of respect in his life and work.

Coach Phil Hatch is a well-known figure in El Paso for his role as head coach of the greater El Paso East versus West football showcase for over 20 years. Beyond his coaching achievements, Hatch is known for his generosity, kindness, exemplary leadership, and strong friendships with numerous students, athletes, parents, staff, and fellow educators.

Hatch’s contributions to the community and impact on the lives of those he has interacted with are recognized and celebrated on Phil Hatch Day. This day serves as a reminder of the positive impact that one person can have on their community and how their legacy can continue to inspire others long after they are gone.

A Montwood High School alum himself, Hatch was nominated for this honor by two fellow alums – former City Rep. Claudia Rodriguez and State Rep. Claudia Ordaz. It is clear that Hatch’s impact goes beyond just sports and has touched many lives in El Paso community.
