On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders signed their second-round pick, cornerback Mike Sainristil, to a four-year rookie contract. The No. 50 overall pick officially joined the team before the start of the minicamp. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Johnny Newton, the No. 36 overall pick from Illinois, signed his four-year rookie deal worth $9.757 million. Despite having undergone surgery for a foot injury in January and playing through it during his final college season, Newton had a dominant senior season.

Head coach Dan Quinn revealed that Newton had a similar injury on his other foot, which required surgery as well. Newton attended the team’s minicamp this week without wearing a boot but no definitive timeline has been set for his return to the field. The Commanders are cautious about rushing his recovery process. Training camp for the team is set to commence later next month.

The signing of Newton was announced by reporter Aaron Wilson on Twitter, who shared details of his contract, including a signing bonus and guaranteed salaries for the upcoming years. The official story was reported by Commanders Wire.
