In Pasco, Washington, Columbia Basin College is seeking approval to launch a new program that aims to produce more IT and computer science professionals in the Tri-Cities area. The college’s proposal for a bachelor’s degree in computer science has been approved by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.
Upon completion of the program, students will be well-positioned for roles as software engineers, web developers, systems analysts, database administrators, network engineers, cybersecurity analysts, and IT consultants. This initiative aligns with CBC’s mission to meet the educational and workforce needs of its community, as stated by Elizabeth Burtner, the assistant vice president for marketing and outreach at the college.
The next step for CBC is to obtain accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. If all goes according to plan, the bachelor’s degree in computer science will be available to students by the fall of 2025. Currently, CBC offers a bachelor’s degree in software development but the new computer science program will emphasize theoretical concepts in the field and provide students with a pathway to pursue advanced degrees such as a master’s or PhD.
