The college football landscape this fall has become even more complex with the addition of a new network broadcasting some of the sport’s biggest games. ESPN has reached an agreement with TNT Sports to sublicense College Football Playoff games from 2024-2028, marking a significant change in the competition among networks to own the broadcast rights for college football games.

In recent years, ESPN has primarily shown SEC and ACC games, with the Big Ten on Fox, NBC, and CBS, and the Big 12 on ESPN and Fox. This coverage will continue until the College Football Playoff begins. The expanded 12-team College Football Playoff will feature four total first-round games, matching up seeds 5 to 12 and 6 to 11, among others. The quarterfinals will also include four games, involving seeds 1 to 8/9, 2 to 7/10, and so on. ESPN has owned the entire playoff since its inception in 2014; their decision to sublicense games to TNT is significant as it marks a change in their ownership of the event.
