The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) and Austin Community College (ACC) have teamed up to create a new technology and cybersecurity apprenticeship program for students. This partnership is aimed at providing students with the opportunity to further their education while gaining practical career skills in a hands-on environment.
On June 28th, ACC hosted an official signing ceremony to kick off the program. Over the past year, more than 100 students have completed apprenticeships in various fields such as health sciences and manufacturing. The partnership is in line with House Bill 584, which became effective on September 1, 2023, allowing state information departments to collaborate with public junior colleges or technical institutes to address shortages in the state’s information resources.
Texas Representative Donna Howard expressed optimism about the partnership, highlighting the potential benefits for ACC students and the state departments involved. She emphasized the value of creating positions in IT cybersecurity that do not require a four-year degree but instead focus on relevant experience and knowledge.
In the pilot program, DIR will serve as the employer, with ACC planning to replicate this model with future program partners from the business and industry sectors. ACC’s next partnership will be with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
