The County Commission and Sheriff Mark Harrell have been working together to address the issues at the Autauga County Metro Jail, which prompted the decision to evacuate inmates. In a statement on Facebook, Harrell stated that he has a moral obligation to ensure the well-being of everyone who enters the jail.

It was unclear from the statement what exactly these issues are, but logistical arrangements have been made with other agencies to house the evacuated inmates. The sheriff emphasized the importance of providing a safe environment for individuals who are being processed and housed during this time.

County Administrator Scott Kramer acknowledged that there are facility issues at the jail and that the commission has been working with Harrell to address these concerns. Workers have been assessing and attempting to resolve these issues, and experts have inspected the facility to identify areas for improvement.

Despite these challenges, both parties remain committed to making necessary improvements within the constraints of law and available resources. The goal is to ensure that anyone who enters the jail is safe, healthy, and secure, regardless of their status or role within the facility. Collaboration between Harrell’s office and Kramer’s administration will continue in order to resolve these issues in a timely manner.
