Molly Kawahata, a former White House climate advisor and an avid ice climber, will speak at the Park City Library about actionable strategies for addressing climate change. Her personal and professional life was the subject of a recent documentary called “The Scale of Hope,” which was produced by Patagonia. In the documentary, Kawahata emphasizes the importance of fostering hope rather than fear to make systemic change required to solve the climate crisis.

According to Kawahata, fear, guilt and shame are not effective strategies for building a long-term movement and getting people involved in climate action. Instead, she believes that hope is crucial, and when we use research-backed communication strategies on climate, we can get more people on board. Kawahata also points out that the majority of American voters are supportive of climate action, regardless of political party. She suggests that framing climate change in terms of public health is an effective way to tap into this support.

The event at the Park City Library on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. is being used as a kickoff to the first phase of the Park City Community Foundation’s zero food waste initiative. The foundation plans to release more details about its residential curbside waste collection program. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be found on their website.
