Hamas has recently revealed that it used a Chinese-made HJ-8L guided anti-tank missile in an attack against the IDF in Rafah. The missile hit caused a fire, which was then extinguished by a Caterpillar 966G. The HJ-8L missile is part of the Chinese HJ-8 missile family, with the L model being lighter and used by armies such as Morocco, Egypt, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.

The HJ-8L launcher can carry two missiles with ranges of 3 km and 4 km. It is a wire-guided system, allowing operators to make course corrections during flight. The missile is equipped with microelectronics systems to reduce weight, making it 22.5 kg. The HJ-8 system includes Western-made components and some parts were reverse-engineered from American, Franco-German and British systems.

Hamas’ use of Chinese weapons has raised concerns about Chinese government involvement in supporting terrorist organizations. It is believed that Iran may have trained Hamas terrorists on these weapons. Israeli intelligence officials were surprised by the stockpile of Chinese-made anti-aircraft missiles used by Hamas.
