China unveiled its first virtual panda bear, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), high-fidelity 3D modeling, and a metaverse to provide an educational and entertaining experience worldwide. The virtual design, meticulously recreates the animal’s physiological structure with over 2 million individual hair strands and advanced modeling techniques. Developed by China’s Forest Administration, China Media Group, and Tencent, the project aims to increase public awareness of pandas and their conservation.

Powered by Tencent’s ‘Hunyuan’ AI model, the virtual panda, named Xun, can interact with users, answering questions and providing scientific information about the species. Xun resides in a “cloud habitat” modeled after the Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve in Sichuan, featuring detailed recreations of plants, rocks, waterfalls, and streams to mimic the panda’s natural environment.

China has been using similar technology for conservation and biodiversity projects for some time now. For instance, they created a virtual tour of the national tiger and leopard reserve that used AI analysis of snow leopard tracks in national parks to improve protection measures for endangered species. These advancements have led to better conservation efforts for endangered species.
