Professor Gu Zhen and her team of student researchers at the Zhejiang University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Zhejiang, China are working towards achieving independence from the West. This desire stems from long-standing anxieties among Chinese Communist Party leaders about being too reliant on American and western high-tech imports. The restrictions imposed by President Trump on telecoms giant Huawei in 2019 only served to confirm these fears.

For years, CCP leaders have emphasized the importance of being self-reliant in critical technologies like microchips. The move by the U.S. government to restrict Huawei’s access to American tech underscored the need for China to develop its own cutting-edge technologies. This pursuit of independence is part of President Xi Jinping’s vision for China’s technological future.

To achieve this goal, Professor Gu Zhen and her team are actively working on developing new technologies at the Zhejiang University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Their research aims to push the boundaries of innovation and establish China as a leader in high-tech industries. By focusing on developing their own capabilities, they hope to reduce China’s reliance on western imports and establish a more self-sufficient technological ecosystem.
