On Thursday, the center and south of Chile experienced intense rains that resulted in one fatality and more than 4,000 people being affected. Authorities declared a state of “catastrophe” in five regions of the country in response to the situation. President Gabriel Boric, who was in Sweden on an official visit, expressed regret over the first death and emphasized that the heavy rains were expected to continue.

The regions of Coquimbo, Valparaiso, Metropolitan, O’Higgins, Ñuble, and Biobío were all under a state of “alarm” issued by the Chilean Meteorological Directorate due to unusually intense rains and winds. The Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, reported that resources were being deployed quickly to these regions to address the situation.

In Santiago, an unprecedented amount of rainfall was expected in just a few hours, equivalent to what would normally be seen in an entire month of June. The heavy rains come after more than a decade of drought in the central region of the country. The extreme weather is attributed to an atmospheric river with a high level of water vapor available for precipitation.
