The seventh round of negotiations for a new collective agreement in the chemical industry began on Monday. In order to increase pressure on the negotiations, warning strikes lasting one to two hours were organized in approximately 50 companies in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. Companies such as Boehringer Ingelheim, Borealis, Lenzing, Novartis, Sandoz, Semperit, and Takeda were impacted.

The unions PRO-GE and GPA had pushed for a wage increase based on a rolling inflation rate of 6.33 percent for the approximately 50,000 employees in the industry. After weeks of intense discussions and negotiations, an agreement was reached in the evening with wages and salaries set to increase by 6.33 percent. This agreement also includes an increase in actual and minimum wages by the same amount as well as a 6.33 percent increase in apprentices’ wages. The new collective agreement will come into effect on May 1, 2024, and will last for 12 months.

Negotiator Berthold Stöger mentioned the challenges of reaching an agreement due to ongoing uncertainties but emphasized the importance of finding a common solution. The Austrian Chemical Industry (FCIO), consisting of around 240 member companies employing almost 50,000 people, had been part of the negotiations. The collective bargaining negotiations in the domestic glass industry had already been finalized with both parties agreeing on a 6.5 percent increase in minimum wages and salaries.
