Cheltenham Town has appointed Gary Johnson as their new director of football, following their relegation from League One and the departure of manager Darrell Clarke. Johnson, who previously managed Torquay United from 2015 to 2018, led the Robins to the National League title during that time.

In his new role, Johnson will assist the board in finding and hiring a new manager for Cheltenham. Club chairman David Bloxham expressed confidence in Johnson’s capabilities, citing his wealth of experience in football management. The club is eager to work with him again and hopes he can help them recover from the disappointment of the previous season.

Johnson’s managerial career has spanned several decades and includes stints at various clubs such as Yeovil Town, Bristol City, and Peterborough United. He has won League Two and Conference titles, as well as the FA Trophy during his time with Yeovil. Additionally, Johnson secured League One promotion with Bristol City and led them to the Championship play-off final in 2007-08.

With his successful track record, including the National League triumph with Cheltenham in 2015-16 and the National League South title with Torquay, Johnson brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role at Cheltenham Town. The club is optimistic about the impact he will have in rebuilding the team and achieving success in the upcoming season.
