The proposed Charlie Ward Champions Ranch sports complex in Southeast Tallahassee is moving forward with plans to develop the project. Named after former FSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, the complex would be situated near the intersection of Capital Circle Southeast and Woodville Highway.

On Tuesday, the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission recommended rezoning the area to allow for the development of the project. Parents like Miesha Barrington are excited about the prospect of a new sports complex in the area. Barrington, a parent of five, frequently visits Four Oaks Park, located a few miles away from the proposed site. She looks forward to having more recreational options for her children closer to home.

The Charlie Ward Champions Ranch would span 109.36 acres and feature multi-sport fields, courts, a golf course and driving range, as well as walking trails and park areas. Approximately one-third of the property would be designated for retail and event spaces. Local residents like pickleball player Spencer Duffey see the sports complex as a positive addition to their neighborhood. Duffey believes that the new facility would offer amenities that are currently lacking in the area.

While approval from city commission is still needed for the project to proceed, it is anticipated that a vote on rezoning will take place at their meeting on August 21st.
