The Charleston Sternwheel Regatta is returning to downtown Charleston in 2024, and businesses like Fife Street Brewing are preparing for the influx of visitors. General Manager John Query has stocked up on beer and tripled their inventory, ensuring that the air conditioning stays high to accommodate the crowd.

The event, which was absent from Charleston summers since 2009, made a comeback in 2022 and brought life and vitality back to the city. Mayor Amy Goodwin described it as the city’s “Super Bowl,” with last year generating tens of millions of dollars for the local economy. With an expected return on investment of $37 million this year, up from $31 million in 2022, Mayor Goodwin emphasized the positive impact it has had on the city.

Mayor Goodwin acknowledged that unpredictable factors like Mother Nature can play a role in the success of the event since it is outdoors, but she expects over 200,000 people to visit Charleston during the Sternwheel Regatta. Fife Street Brewing manager John Query noted that summer events in Charleston like bike races and FestivALL contribute to driving sales at their establishment, not just the Regatta. “We really appreciate all of our local customers and everybody we’ve met from out of town who come in for these events,” Query said.

This year’s Charleston Sternwheel Regatta will take place from July 3-7, providing a boost to local businesses and bringing the community together for a week of fun and entertainment.
