On a Saturday afternoon, a group of activists from Scientist Rebellion Global, Growth Kills, and Extinction Rebellion gathered in Brussels’ Nieuwstraat to engage with shoppers and challenge the consumer society that drives their behavior. This action was part of a series of events happening throughout the week in Brussels.

The activists aimed to connect with everyday people and hear about their concerns through this type of engagement. Campaigner Manua, one of the activists involved, highlighted the importance of reaching the public in this way. By initiating conversations and sharing knowledge, the activists hoped to spark reflection on the consequences of overconsumption and the need for systemic change.

Being surrounded by advertising that promotes constant consumption, the activists wanted to provoke thought about the societal norms and values that prioritize material wealth over wellbeing. They called attention to the idea of working less, consuming less, and pursuing meaningful activities that contribute to personal fulfillment and community well-being. By questioning the current lifestyle driven by capitalism and neoliberal policies, they envisioned a future where individuals prioritize quality over quantity and prioritize human connection over material accumulation.
