The Arizona Cardinals are preparing for their first game of the 2024 NFL regular season, which will take place on the road against the Buffalo Bills in just 88 days. No. 88 has not been worn by the team in some time, as it is one of their retired numbers.

The number holds significance for the Cardinals, as it was last worn by tight end J.V. Cain from 1974-1978. Cain tragically passed away in 1979 after collapsing on the practice field, marking the end of his promising career. Despite his short time with the team, Cain made an impact during his tenure and was named rookie of the year in 1974.

Following Cain, No. 88 was retired by the Cardinals to honor his memory. However, receiver Sonny Randle is recognized as the best player to wear the number. Randle wore No. 88 from 1959-1966 and earned multiple Pro Bowl selections and a first-team All-Pro nod during that time period. His impressive stats, including two 1,000-yard seasons, set him apart as a standout player for the Cardinals.
