Several departments at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) have recently relocated to the new Mustang Business Park near the San Luis Obispo Regional Airport. The move took place mid-June and two weeks later, employees at the Registrar, Administration, and Finance departments are still getting accustomed to their new surroundings.
Lori Serna and Justin Vastine from the Administration and Finance department have had a relatively smooth transition to the Business Park. Vastine appreciates the open concept working environments that foster more synergy and collaboration among the different units that have moved in. Serna enjoys the quiet nature of the Business Park, allowing employees to familiarize themselves with the area before the move.
However, employees are still working on adjusting to logistical aspects of their jobs, especially concerning collaboration with teams on the main campus. There is also a social adjustment in not seeing students on a daily basis, which can be challenging for employees who miss the constant reinforcement of their mission and purpose.
Despite some challenges, employees have opportunities to provide feedback and ask questions to ensure a smooth transition. While one employee mentioned difficulty in taking public transportation due to furniture configuration issues during move-in, Serna believes that this new phase presents opportunities for communication and adaptation. Although move-in was delayed due to furniture configuration issues, Cal Poly plans to continue with its staggered move-in process following necessary approvals.
