At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich on Sept 6, visitors were able to inspect BYD electric cars. Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant BYD has recently introduced its fifth-generation DM (dual mode) hybrid technology for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This technology allows these vehicles to achieve a comprehensive driving range of 2,100 kilometers.

According to Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, the plug-in hybrid vehicles equipped with this technology are leading globally in various key indicators. They achieve a thermal efficiency of 46.06 percent, have a fuel consumption of 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers even in electricity-deficit states, and have a total range of 2,100 kilometers. The driving range was calculated based on vehicles with a fully charged battery and a full tank of petrol, primarily using high-capacity power batteries.

At the launch event, BYD also introduced two new car models, the Qin L DM-i and the Seal 06 DM-i, both powered by this new technology. These models consume only a third of the fuel that traditional cars do and have triple the range. The prices for these models range from 99,800 yuan ($14,000) to 139,800 yuan. BYD aims to lead the global development of plug-in hybrid technology and promote the green transformation of the global auto industry.
