Bury College students are now taking a hands-on approach to dealing with real emergencies by using virtual reality systems. Thanks to a donation from FLAIM Systems, an international emergency training company, students on the public service course have been able to use a virtual reality extinguisher fire-fighting system.

FLAIM director Ted O’Brien recently visited the college to guide students through various scenarios, such as house fires and aircraft fires, providing them with an immersive fire-fighting experience in a safe and sustainable environment. This experience is valuable in preparing students for future roles in the Fire Service or other emergency response careers.

Tony Greenhalgh, a public services tutor and ex-firefighter, expressed gratitude towards FLAIM for their donation and the impact it has had on the students’ learning experience. He emphasized the importance of being able to practice with realistic equipment in a safe environment. Following the session, students Sam Walsh and Cecilia Kayembe shared their enthusiasm for the virtual reality training and expressed their eagerness to tackle more challenging scenarios in the future. This hands-on experience is providing them with valuable skills and knowledge that will benefit them as they progress in their studies and future careers.
