Advancements in eye health have led to a significant improvement in vision quality during the 21st century. The Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) has conducted recent research that shows a decrease in the prevalence of low farsightedness, resulting in better eyesight for many individuals. The improvement in vision quality is not only due to better glasses but also to advancements in eye disease treatments and increased awareness of eye health risks.

The positive development in population health surveys conducted by THL has shown that the elderly have experienced a significant improvement in vision quality. In the past two decades, the number of elderly people with impaired distance vision has decreased, allowing more individuals to continue driving safely. Additionally, the prevalence of age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma has reduced, leading to fewer cases of visual impairment among older adults.
