The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution calling for an “immediate” ceasefire during the month of Ramadan in Gaza, where over 32,300 people have died as a result of Israel’s military offensive on the Palestinian enclave. The resolution was backed by Algeria and nine other non-permanent member countries.
UN Secretary General António Guterres announced the resolution on social media, urging an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages. The resolution was approved with 14 votes in favor, no votes against, and one abstention from the United States. Russia rejected an amendment that called for stronger language in the resolution.
The Algerian ambassador to the UN praised the Council for fulfilling its responsibility to maintain international peace and security. The United States representative at the UN expressed support for the resolution’s objectives and urged all member states to pressure Hamas to accept the agreement for a ceasefire.
This resolution marks the first time that the Security Council has called for a ceasefire in Gaza, following previous failed attempts due to vetoes from Russia and China. Despite Israeli objections, the United States abstained from the vote as they support the resolution. The resolution emphasizes compliance with International Law regarding civilians in conflict zones.
