At HopeLine in Raleigh, trained counselors are prepared to support anyone facing life’s challenges by listening, offering solutions, and reminding them that they are cared for. During Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month in June, we encourage everyone to recognize the importance of mental health and seek help when needed. Despite the misconception that seeking help is a sign of weakness, we want to remind men that it is okay to prioritize their mental health.

Society recognizes that men may tend to be more closed off and less likely to seek help, but it is important to fight against the stigma and encourage men to prioritize their mental health. If someone needs help, the counselors at HopeLine are there to listen. In a crisis, individuals can call the 988 hotline or reach the HelpLine locally at 919-231-4525. Men’s mental health is just as important as anyone else’s, and it is essential to reach out for support when needed.

The call volume at HopeLine has been steady, indicating that mental health discussions are becoming more common and more people are reaching out for assistance. While suicide rates are equal among genders, men are more likely to die by suicide because their means are often more lethal. Overcoming stigmas surrounding men and mental health is an ongoing effort to dispel the idea that seeking help is a sign of weakness or burden. We must continue to work together towards destigmatizing mental health and encouraging men to prioritize their wellbeing.
