The Detroit Police Department is committed to raising awareness about men’s mental health throughout the entire month of June. This initiative aims to help men understand their challenges and develop effective coping strategies. Men’s mental health is an often overlooked aspect of overall wellness, but Detroit police Chief James White is determined to change that by encouraging men to seek help when needed.

Chief White emphasized the importance of acknowledging mental health struggles, such as anxiety and depression, that many men face silently. The Men’s Wellness Matters event, now in its second year, provides valuable resources and support to men in the Detroit community. The event, held outside the police headquarters, offered a variety of services including health checks, haircuts, massages, and eye exams to promote holistic wellness.

Corporal M.J. Harris highlighted the significance of addressing physical and mental health together, creating a comprehensive approach to wellness. Chief White’s background in mental health has inspired him to advocate for expanded mental health resources in Detroit and beyond. The department also plans to introduce a crisis intervention team to better respond to mental health incidents, emphasizing the importance of saving lives and improving quality of life for all residents.

The Men’s Wellness Matters event is expected to return in 2025 after the success of this year’s event. It will continue to be a free resource open to anyone in need of support. Chief White emphasizes the importance of prioritizing mental health and hopes to continue promoting awareness and destigmatizing mental health struggles for men in the community.
