The United States is facing an ongoing crisis of maternal mortality, with stark racial disparities that need to be addressed. According to the most recent data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 51 deaths were associated with pregnancy in 2020. Among those, 23 were Black women, 13 were Latina, 6 were Asian, and 8 were white. These disparities are concerning but there are individuals working tirelessly to transform the maternal healthcare landscape for people of color.

Latham Thomas is one such individual. She is a doula and founder of Mama Glow, a global maternal health and education platform dedicated to providing a path to safer pregnancies for women of color. In a recent conversation, Latham shared her work and goals in addressing maternal health disparities.

Shirleen Allicot also reported on maternal health disparities, highlighting the importance of addressing these issues in order to improve outcomes for pregnant women of color. It is clear that there is much work to be done in order to ensure that all women have access to safe and effective maternal healthcare.

During Black Maternal Health Week, it is important for us to raise awareness about this ongoing crisis and support initiatives and individuals working towards creating a more equitable healthcare system for all women. By prioritizing maternal health and advocating for change, we can make a difference in improving outcomes for pregnant women of color and ensuring that every woman has access to the care she needs.
