The construction on a new health center at Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, MI started on Monday, June 17. This comes after a one-year delay due to funding issues. The health clinic will be located in the former teacher’s lounge, which will be relocated to another part of the building. The school board approved $730,574 in grant funds for the construction, which was provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services through the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department.
The district had received a $250,000 grant last year for the clinic, but construction could not begin due to late timing of funds and insufficient amount for construction. A new agreement approved by the school board states that the county will provide $475,000 for the clinic construction. The clinic will be operated by the Kalamazoo County Health Department and will offer services such as diagnosis and treatment for illnesses, psychosocial and disease prevention services, and Medicaid outreach services.
When it opens, this new health center at Loy Norrix High School will be available to all Kalamazoo Public Schools students. There are currently no plans to open it to non-KPS students.
