During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the color green was used to symbolize support for mental health awareness. In Norton, WBZ visited a high school where students are working to break down stigmas surrounding mental health through an initiative called the Green Bandana Project.

Vanessa Lee, a freshman at Norton High School and peer advocate, describes the Green Bandana Project as a stress relief tool that she keeps on her backpack during tests. She explains that it’s embroidered with a supportive message, which helps her to feel more comfortable seeking help when she needs it.

Assistant Principal Ronnie Goldstein of Norton Junior High School recognizes the increasing pressures faced by students today, particularly due to social media. He emphasizes that it’s okay for students to rely on others for support and that the green bandanas signify friendship and support while reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Goldstein is involved with Project 351, a non-profit supporting the Green Bandana Project.

Benson Chang stresses the importance of prioritizing mental well-being and reaching out for help when needed. He believes that by breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health issues, we can create a more supportive environment for all students.

The project aims to provide students with resources and support to help them manage their mental health and reduce stress levels during exam season.
