The Lexington Legends have recently introduced a mental health and wellness program for their players in partnership with an online wellness service called “Manual.” While playing professional baseball may be a dream come true for many, the pressures involved can sometimes feel overwhelming. The team is focusing on helping players prioritize their mental health, both on and off the field.

Manager Gregg Zaun emphasized the challenges of playing baseball, describing it as a sport that requires mental strength. He highlighted the daily failures that players face, particularly hitters, and the need to understand and cope with the ups and downs of the game. In addition to on-field pressures, there are external factors that can add to the stress faced by players.

Zaun, who played 16 seasons in the Major Leagues, understands the stress that players experience while performing in front of crowds. He acknowledged that many players view their current opportunity as their last chance, adding to the pressure they face. By committing to supporting mental health within the community, organization, and players, the Lexington Legends demonstrate a strong commitment to the well-being of their team members.

General manager Justin Ferrarella emphasized the importance of providing players with a discreet outlet to access resources and seek help when needed. He highlighted how men tend to hold things in and may struggle to discuss their mental health openly. The “Manual” program aims to empower men to make informed health decisions and live fulfilling lives by placing a special focus on supporting young men who may be resistant to traditional forms of support.
