He acknowledged that while the scientific approach and clinical trials had worked well in the past for other diseases, he realized the importance of collaboration between scientists and affected communities to effectively address public health crises.

The activists, mostly young gay men affected by HIV/AIDS, grew frustrated with being dismissed by the scientific and regulatory communities. They demanded a seat at the table and inclusion in decision-making about clinical trials. Despite initial resistance, Dr. Fauci recognized the validity of their demands and learned the value of setting aside preconceived notions to truly hear what they were saying.

Dr. Fauci admitted that if he were in their shoes, he would likely have done the same thing. He understood the need for humility, empathy, and openness in his role as a public health official to effectively address public health crises like HIV/AIDS epidemic. This experience taught him that listening to marginalized communities is crucial in creating effective solutions for public health issues.
