Documentary film “The Science of African Women” to Premiere in Madrid

The Women for Africa Foundation is set to release their documentary film, “The Science of African Women”, on Thursday, 23 May at the Palacio de la Prensa in Madrid. This project, chaired by María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, former Vice-President of the Spanish Government, explores the first eight years of the “Science by Women/Ellas Investigan” initiative. Through direct testimonies from leading African women scientists, viewers will gain insight into the gender inequalities and professional obstacles these women face.

The documentary sheds light on the disparities between science in African environments and Western countries. It emphasizes issues such as limited access to industry and inadequate technical resources for research. Despite these challenges, the film features innovative projects that these researchers are currently working on, many of which have direct applications in their own societies. Their resourcefulness and unconventional approaches not only enhance their work but also contribute new perspectives and knowledge to the global scientific community.

The film also explores the transformative impact of this program on African women scientists, institutions hosting them, and their colleagues who collaborate with them. It emphasizes the importance of scientific cooperation for progress in any field. The positive effects of supporting and encouraging scientific excellence across Africa are showcased through this project.

Directed by journalist Begoña Piña and filmmaker Pedro Mambrú, this documentary is the Women for Africa Foundation’s third audiovisual project. It provides a compelling look at the vital role of women in African science and serves as a call to action to promote and celebrate scientific excellence in Africa.

This event aims to provide a platform for discussion about gender equality in science and encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields. The documentary will be followed by a Q&A session with leading African women scientists who have participated in this initiative.

Overall, “The Science of African Women” highlights the challenges faced by female scientists from Africa while also showcasing their contributions towards advancing science globally. It is an important reminder that gender equality is essential for progress
