The International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Governing Board has approved 22 sports for inclusion in the Paralympic Sport Program for the 2028 Los Angeles Games (LA28). Additionally, a shortlist of sports was identified, and LA28 was given the opportunity to consider adding a new Paralympic sport from this selection.

Over the past year, LA28 conducted a thorough evaluation process with input from International Federations and the IPC to gather the necessary information for a final proposal. Similar to the criteria used for assessing sports for the 2028 Olympic Games, LA28 looked at global and domestic popularity, universality at major events, and the cost and complexity of the shortlisted sports.

After this evaluation, LA28 has decided to propose Para Climbing as a new addition to its Paralympic sport program. If approved by the IPC Governing Board, Para Climbing will be added to LA28’s initial list of sports that already includes Para Swimming, Wheelchair Basketball, and Wheelchair Rugby.

The proposal to include Para Climbing in the 2028 Paralympic Sport Program will be discussed and voted on during the IPC Governing Board meeting on June 26, 2024. The LA28 Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place from August 15 to 27, 2028.
