Mexico has elected Claudia Sheinbaum as its new president with a substantial lead of around 30 percentage points. The government coalition has also regained control of an absolute majority in Congress, marking a significant milestone for the country. This election result stands out for two main reasons:

Firstly, it is the first time in Mexico’s history that a woman will be leading the country, breaking traditional gender roles in a classic macho society. Two women led the list of candidates, collectively receiving almost 90 percent of the votes. This reflects the significant social change that has been taking place in many Latin American countries since the early 2000s, particularly in larger urban areas where the majority of the population resides.

Secondly, the success of Morena party reaffirms its rise as the dominant political force in Mexico. Established just a decade ago, Morena and its founder Andrés Manuel López Obrador won the presidency in 2018, securing an absolute majority in both chambers of Congress at that time. Since then, Morena has expanded its influence at the regional level, gaining control of 21 out of 32 territorial entities in Mexico.

Sheinbaum’s popularity stems from her populist approach and efforts to improve the conditions of Mexico’s poorer population. By implementing measures like doubling the minimum wage and expanding social programs, she has reduced poverty rates over the past six years. Despite facing challenges like Covid-19 pandemic, Mexico has maintained robust foreign investment and become a key manufacturing hub for America’s market.

However, concerns were raised about potential for Morena coalition to achieve two-thirds majority which could have implications for constitutional changes and democracy in Mexico. While Sheinbaum narrowly missed this majority, there are still checks and balances in place such as opposition parties, civil society organizations and media to ensure accountability and protection of democratic values. The main challenges ahead include addressing security issues related to drug cartels and managing budget deficit sustain economic growth and stability.

In conclusion, this election marks a significant milestone for Mexico as it sets itself on course towards further social change and economic growth under leadership that prioritizes improving living conditions for all citizens while ensuring democratic values are upheld through checks
