Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdul Latif al-Zayani and Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri-Kani met in Tehran to discuss restoring relations between the two countries. The talks were held within the framework of fraternal historical relations, religious ties, good neighborliness, common history, and mutual interests.
Despite a historically tense relationship between Iran and Bahrain, the majority of Bahrain’s population being Shiite, the two countries are now working towards improving their relations. In the past, Bahrain has accused Iran of interfering in its internal affairs, with the ruling dynasty needing Saudi intervention in 2011 to maintain power. However, recent steps by moderate monarchies in the region to improve their relations with Iran have prompted Bahrain to also move in that direction.
The talks held in Tehran signal a potential shift in the relationship between the two countries, focusing on common interests and historical ties to pave the way for improved diplomatic relations.
