On January 8, the Brazilian Embassy in Buenos Aires sent a list of 143 individuals wanted by Brazilian justice to the Milei government. According to a report in the newspaper Clarín, at least 60 people who are being investigated for their alleged involvement in the events of January 8, 2023 in Brasília have requested political asylum in Argentina. These requests were made after the suspects learned that Brazil was going to request their international capture.

The sources quoted by Clarín stated that Brazil sent the list of wanted individuals through its embassy in Buenos Aires, asking the Milei government to confirm how many of them are in the country. This may be in preparation for requesting extradition. Granting political asylum can complicate the extradition process, and the National Commission for Refugees (Conare) in Argentina is responsible for analyzing and granting these asylum requests.

The Brazilian Federal Police told CNN that at least 48 of the individuals wanted for the events of January 8 are in Argentina. The Federal Supreme Court (STF) issued 208 preventive arrest warrants for people identified as fugitives for their alleged participation in those events. However, it is not clear if any formal extradition request has been made yet or not.

The evaluation of asylum requests in Argentina could make extradition more challenging, even before a formal extradition request is made. The complex situation involving these individuals underscores the delicate diplomatic and legal considerations between Brazil and Argentina.
