Furman Lake has been graced by black swans while May brings awareness to mental health issues. College-age individuals, particularly students, are increasingly utilizing mental health resources. In response, the staff at the Trone Center for Mental Fitness is reminding the Furman community about ways to maintain mental well-being throughout the year.

Maintaining a clean and cozy space, setting boundaries, and socializing with a support system are important ways to support mental health. Additionally, ensuring an adequate amount of sleep, using mental health apps like Headspace, and limiting screen time can all contribute to overall well-being. Spending time outdoors and utilizing resources like the campus hotline or national hotline for support are also helpful measures.

Engaging in hobbies and taking slow, deep breaths when feeling stressed can also be beneficial for maintaining mental fitness. Paying attention to nutrition, hydration, and engaging in physical activities like exercise or stretching are essential components of overall well-being. Just like physical fitness requires consistent attention and benefits everyone, mental fitness requires the same level of care and attention to thrive.

The Trone Center for Mental Fitness was established through a generous donation from David ’77 and June Trone and emphasizes the importance of mental fitness in reducing stigma and promoting well-being. Approximately a quarter of Furman’s students utilize the center each year for counseling services. The center is dedicated to supporting the mental well-being of the Furman community by providing valuable resources and guidance to promote overall wellness throughout the year.
