Boeing showcased OLED display technologies in collaboration with LG Display and LIG Nex1 at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) to demonstrate their potential innovative uses in cabin interiors. Since 2020, the three companies have been working together under the leadership of Boeing Korea Engineering and Technology Center to develop smart cabin technology adapted for aerospace applications.
One of the potential applications of OLED panels was presented in a galley design concept created by Boeing subsidiary, EnCore Interiors. This design featured a 1.4m OLED panel integrated into an entryway door monument and a curved OLED panel on the ceiling. According to Michael Sohn, vice-president of commercial operations at Boeing Encore Interiors, the advanced OLED screens seamlessly blend into cabin architecture, providing a modern aesthetic and allowing airlines to express their brand identity, engage with passengers, and explore additional revenue opportunities.
LG Display developed OLED panels for aircraft, while LIG Nex1 led the development of the smart divider control network and the software and hardware to operate transparent and curved OLED panel systems in an airplane environment with low-power, high-efficiency design. Boeing’s managing director, marketing sales support Kelly Schable, emphasized the unique requirements for implementing OLED panels on aircraft and the various potential uses for the technology, such as displaying brand information, safety notices, or advertisements.
As part of their ongoing development of these technologies, Boeing plans to conduct ground and flight testing of the OLED panel project on its ecoDemonstrator program this year. The collaboration between Boeing, LG Display
