The metalworkers unions Fim, Fiom, and Uilm are expressing concern over the impact of the Boeing crisis on the Leonardo plant in Grottaglie, Taranto. This plant is responsible for building two sections of the 787 fuselage. Currently, the direct employment at the site is just under 1,000 units, with around 200 workers being sent on secondment to other factories. The monthly deliveries of fuselages to Boeing are at very low numbers, and there are over 40 fuselages produced, stored, and not yet collected by the American customer in Grottaglie.

The unions have shared that they have learned of a new “Z60” production plan sent by Boeing, which entails a reduction in deliveries to the customer. This would lead to an increase in the saturation of the site. The unions have been trying to engage in discussions with Leonardo, specifically the aerostructures division, since early April. However, there has been no willingness on the part of the company to address this critical issue affecting production volumes and organizational management at the plant.

The metalworking unions highlight that ongoing diversification projects do not generate enough workloads to counteract the uncertainties in the Boeing market and the B787 program. They plan to request a new meeting with the HR division to address these issues and seek the involvement of
