The Amazon is home to apex predators, the black caiman crocodiles. These terrifying creatures can grow up to 5 meters long and will eat almost anything when food is scarce. Scientists tagged 75 black caimans in French Guiana to study their diet, and found that fish makes up the majority of their diet, but they also consume waterfowl and mammals like deer, peccaries, and tapirs. Surprisingly, evidence suggests that black caimans prey on other apex predators like jaguars and green anacondas in the Amazon.

These predators have been known to attack humans when food is scarce. In February 2010, an 11-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a black caiman while bathing in Rondônia state, Brazil. Black caimans have a stealthy hunting style that utilizes camouflage to approach their prey before striking suddenly and either swallowing small prey whole or dragging larger animals into deep water to drown.

Due to illegal hunting for their meat and skin, black caimans were classified as vulnerable in past decades. However, efforts to conserve these creatures have shown some success in certain areas, though more data is needed to fully understand and protect the population status of the black caiman. Despite the challenges they face from habitat destruction and poaching, these apex predators play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the region’s wildlife in the intricate ecosystem of the Amazon.
