In the aftermath of India’s general election, the ruling BJP party lost its absolute majority in parliament, marking a significant decline in support from the people. Despite this setback, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to his supporters outside the BJP headquarters in New Delhi after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a victory with 290 seats.

However, the election results were disappointing for Modi’s ruling party, which won only 240 seats. This outcome required the BJP to rely on its alliance partners to maintain a majority in parliament, a major shift from previous election victories where the BJP secured a majority on its own. This result dealt a blow to Modi’s image of invincibility that he had cultivated over the past decade.

The opposition coalition, led by the Congress party, exceeded expectations by winning more than 200 seats in parliament. This result was a clear statement from the people that they did not want Modi and his party to have full control over India. Despite failing to oust Modi from power, the opposition successfully challenged his dominance in Indian politics and raised questions about the BJP’s strategy during the campaign.

Analysts noted that concerns about economic issues such as inflation and unemployment played a significant role in shaping the election results. The BJP’s overconfident campaign slogan of winning over 400 seats was met with skepticism from voters facing economic hardships. The BJP’s Hindutva ideology also contributed to anti-Muslim sentiment in the country, leading to criticism of Modi’s governance style.
