The Biden-Harris Administration has announced $9.3 million in federal funding for six projects aimed at making clean hydrogen more accessible and affordable. These projects will focus on converting waste feedstock materials into clean energy for electricity generation, industrial decarbonization, and transportation, aligning with the administration’s decarbonization goals.

The National Energy Technology Laboratory, supervised by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM), will oversee the management of these projects. To date, FECM has invested approximately $138 million in projects since January 2021 to explore clean hydrogen production methods and enhance the performance of hydrogen-fueled turbines.

These initiatives align with DOE’s Hydrogen Shot initiative, which aims to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per kilogram within a decade. By promoting new, clean hydrogen paths in the US, these projects aim to reduce landfill waste volume and create economic opportunities in local communities by establishing waste-to-energy plants.
