Urodynamics technology is a tool used by healthcare providers to understand bladder function and diagnose incontinence. Dr. Zhina Sadeghi, a urologist at UCI Health and an assistant professor of urology at UCI School of Medicine, discusses her research on this topic.
Currently, urodynamics testing involves patients being connected to multiple tubes and a computer in a clinical setting, which may not accurately reflect their bladder function in their daily lives. To address this issue, a portable urodynamics device called Glean has been developed. This small plastic device can be inserted into the patient’s bladder, allowing them to go about their daily routine at home or work while the device collects information. Once the data is collected, the device can be removed and the patient can discuss the diagnosis and treatment plan with their healthcare provider.
At UCI, Dr. Sadeghi and her team are currently involved in a trial to collect data from conventional urodynamics testing to program the Glean device. They are excited about the potential of this technology and are hopeful that it will be available to patients in the near future.
