The New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors recently discovered listeria in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa fresh spinach, prompting Solata Foods LLC of Newburgh, New York to issue a recall for their “Fresh Spinach” product. This recall affects over 40 fresh spinach products distributed to local retailers in various sizes. While no illnesses have been reported yet, consumers who have purchased any of the affected products are advised to return them for a refund.

Listeria is a harmful organism that can cause serious and fatal infections. Symptoms may range from mild (such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea) to severe (headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions). Listeriosis can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations like young children, elderly individuals, those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their unborn babies.

It is essential for consumers to stay vigilant and be aware of food recalls when it involves harmful organisms like listeria. By returning affected products promptly and following proper food safety guidelines, individuals can protect themselves and their loved ones from potential infections. It is also advisable to wash all produce thoroughly before consuming it to reduce the risk of contamination by harmful bacteria like listeria.
