David Knežević, a Serbian citizen and husband of Ane Knežević, disappeared in the Madrid neighborhood of Salamanca on February 2. In May he was arrested on suspicion of being connected to the disappearance of his ex-wife. According to Blic, he rented a Peugeot 308 car in Belgrade and traveled to Madrid on June 30. He returned to Belgrade on February 5 and returned the car on February 15, but with modifications like tinted windows, changed license plates, and missing stickers. The Spanish and Serbian police are investigating his movements in Serbia during that time period.

Knežević entered Serbia via the Bajakovo-Batrovci border crossing. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the highways he traveled and locations he frequented in Belgrade. The Spanish National Police’s Group 12 is looking into the possibility that he returned to Serbia with a large suitcase, potentially containing his wife’s body. Ana Knežević, the missing woman, was a US citizen who was married to David for 13 years. They separated this summer, and Ana moved to Madrid. They co-owned significant assets, and the divorce process had been initiated, with David trying to sell their shared properties.

The Chief Public Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade confirmed cooperation with the National Police of Spain and the FBI regarding the murder and kidnapping suspicions. Numerous premises related to Knežević have been searched in Belgrade, and individuals associated with him, such as his parents and employees of the rent-a-car agency
