Belgians tend to stay with the same company for an average of 11 years and 4 months, which is higher than the average seniority ten years ago. This is according to HR organization Acerta, which reports that employees typically have around four employers throughout their careers. However, there are significant differences in average seniority between small SMEs (6.5-8 years) and larger companies with 500 or more employees (15.5 years on average). The financial sector has an average seniority of 26.6 years compared to 7.7 years in the trade industry.

In contrast to older employees who are staying in their roles longer due to the need to work later in their careers, young employees tend to change jobs more frequently. Despite this, Acerta found that staying with an employer for more than 11 years does not necessarily mean a static work environment as job content can evolve over time.

Acerta analyzed data based on 340,000 employees from over 44,000 private companies in Belgium. The study also reveals that the influx of young employees who tend to change jobs more frequently contrasts with older employees who are staying in their roles longer due to the need to work later in their careers.
